Hotel loyalty programmes with benefits beyond points

A hotel membership can change the room you receive, the time you have to leave it, or the service available during your stay. Some programmes let you confirm an upgrade before arrival. Others offer lounge access, dining or spa credits, or more freedom over how you book.

Some benefits begin with a free registration. Others come with an annual fee, or require enough qualifying stays to reach a higher membership tier. Which programme is worth joining depends on the hotels you choose and how you travel. The selection below looks at each membership’s particular strengths, what it takes to receive them and the booking conditions that matter.

Leaders Club: recognition across independent hotels

The Leading Hotels of the World’s Leaders Club brings a shared set of privileges to a collection of independent hotels. Membership is free, making it worth checking before reserving a property in the collection.

Eligible stays include priority for an upgrade at arrival, consideration for early check-in and late check-out, and continental breakfast for two. Room and timing requests depend on availability.

After your first paid qualifying stay, you receive one pre-arrival upgrade request; another follows each January. A successful request lets you know about the better room before arriving, but the request itself is not a guarantee. Spending US$5,000 on qualifying stays in a calendar year earns Sterling status and a larger upgrade allowance. The benefits page explains the distinction.

Booking matters. LHW’s website or app is the straightforward route. Reservations made directly with an individual hotel usually do not qualify, although LHW names exceptions in its terms. Joining the club and adding a number to any reservation is not enough.

InterContinental Ambassador: paying for a firmer promise

InterContinental Ambassador costs US$225 for 12 months, or 45,000 IHG One Rewards points. At InterContinental hotels, its central benefits are a guaranteed one-category upgrade and guaranteed 4 p.m. check-out. A dedicated check-in area and IHG One Rewards Platinum Elite status are included too.

The upgrade is assigned at arrival. It may mean a better view or a higher category of room; it does not promise a suite or Club lounge access. On reward nights and free nights, the upgrade is subject to availability. Specific hotel and special-event exceptions also apply. If a covered upgrade or late check-out cannot be delivered, the benefits guarantee provides compensation.

The annual weekend-night certificate can help justify the fee. It covers the second night of an eligible stay of at least two nights, booked on the special Ambassador Complimentary Weekend Night rate. Availability is limited. Compare the total against the other rates you would actually book; a certificate does not necessarily halve the cheapest available price.

For a planned InterContinental stay, I would put the value of a late departure into that calculation. Being able to use the room through the afternoon can matter more than its next category.

IHG One Rewards: earn a suite upgrade or lounge membership

The free IHG One Rewards programme has a separate set of Milestone Rewards. At 20 qualifying nights in a calendar year, you can choose a confirmable suite upgrade. At 40, annual lounge membership becomes one of the choices. These rewards must be earned through stays, even if you have paid for Ambassador.

The suite award can cover an eligible stay of up to five nights. You request it through IHG Customer Care between 14 days and 24 hours before arrival, subject to availability and rate restrictions. An upgrade into a Club-floor suite does not itself include lounge access. The lounge reward admits the member and one guest to participating hotel lounges during qualifying stays; it does not supply every extra sold with a Club room.

For someone regularly staying with IHG, those choices deserve attention before automatically selecting more points.

The Club by SLH: privileges at boutique hotels

A black SLH The Club membership card lies at an angle across its printed welcome material.

The Club by SLH gives travellers a way to build recognition across its collection of boutique hotels. Joining is free. Entry-level Club 01 offers a member rate, bottled water and arrival or departure flexibility where available. Club 02 adds a possible one-category room upgrade and continental breakfast for two.

Use the tier already confirmed in your account when planning a stay. Crossing a qualification threshold during a visit does not give you the higher tier’s privileges for that same booking. Upgrades and flexible arrival or departure times remain subject to availability.

The club terms also make the reservation route important: use an eligible SLH channel, such as slh.com or its app. Booking directly with the individual hotel does not automatically qualify. An SLH property may be sold through other partnerships, but that does not make the different programmes’ benefits interchangeable.

Marriott Bonvoy: a wider choice of hotels

A hotel need not have “Marriott” above the door to participate in Marriott Bonvoy. Autograph Collection, The Luxury Collection and Tribute Portfolio bring individually named hotels into Marriott’s portfolio. Selected Design Hotels also participate, with a more limited set of benefits. This makes Bonvoy worth checking when a particular hotel catches your attention.

Membership is free, but the substantial stay benefits require status. Platinum Elite, normally earned with 50 elite-night credits in a calendar year, offers upgrades including selected suites when available, and lounge access or welcome-gift choices at participating brands. The benefits differ across the portfolio.

Platinum’s 4 p.m. departure is particularly useful. It is guaranteed at most participating hotels, although resorts, convention hotels and Design Hotels are among the exceptions where availability determines it. Some brands have different provisions or are excluded, so check the property’s rules.

The booking route still matters. Marriott explicitly classifies Booking.com and similar online travel agencies as non-qualifying channels for stay rewards and membership-tier benefits. A hotel’s discretionary welcome does not turn that reservation into a qualifying stay. Booking an eligible rate directly with the participating hotel can qualify; Marriott’s central website is not the only option.

A personal recommendation

My personal recommendation here is the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card, for the travel history it evokes. In my Portrait of Marcellus F. Berry, I traced how American Express won the confidence of European hotels. A 1921 advertisement used the line “From the Sahara to the Ritz.” That older connection between American Express, the Ritz and the travelling guest appeals to me. My preference owes more to that heritage than to a calculation of which card earns the most.

Radisson Rewards: keep benefits when booking elsewhere

Radisson Rewards makes an unusually useful distinction between earning points and recognising a guest. Its rules allow stays booked through Booking.com and other third-party vendors to count towards status and receive the relevant hotel benefits. They do not earn points. Give the hotel your membership number at check-in so the stay can be recorded.

Membership is free. Premium follows three qualifying stays or five nights, and includes room upgrades when available. Breakfast for the member and one companion begins at VIP. That tier requires 20 stays or 30 nights within its qualifying period; the programme resets its counters when you move up a tier, so do not treat those figures as a single running total from registration.

These are the Radisson Rewards rules for participating hotels in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. Radisson-branded hotels in the Americas belong to a different programme under Choice. Check the property’s participation and the applicable conditions before booking.

The freedom to compare reservation sites while retaining hotel privileges gives Radisson a clear place in this selection.

Hilton Honors: status across a broad hotel collection

Hilton Honors is free to join. Gold adds availability-based room upgrades and a daily dining benefit at selected brands. In 2026, it can be earned with 25 qualifying nights, 15 stays or US$6,000 in eligible spending during the year.

That dining benefit may be continental breakfast for two or a food-and-beverage credit, depending on the brand and region. Check the hotel’s MyWay provisions when comparing rates.

Hilton also offers a route into participating SLH hotels. Gold and Diamond members booking through Hilton can use that status for privileges there, including a possible room upgrade and breakfast. This is separate from qualifying through SLH’s own club.

If you already have Hilton status, compare both booking routes for the SLH hotel you want. The rate and the benefits together determine which is more useful.

World of Hyatt: confirm a suite before arrival

World of Hyatt deserves a place for travellers who stay often enough to earn its Milestone Rewards. At 40 qualifying nights or 65,000 base points in a calendar year, you receive a Guest of Honor award and can select a suite-upgrade award as an additional choice.

Both awards cover eligible stays of up to seven nights. The suite upgrade can be confirmed at booking, provided standard-suite award availability exists at a participating hotel. That advance certainty is valuable when the extra space matters. Guest of Honor lets you use or gift Globalist benefits, so a travelling companion can benefit without earning the status themselves.

Ordinary Globalist qualification takes 60 nights or 100,000 base points a year. The commitment is substantial. I would consider it when the hotels and journeys already fit, rather than adding trips simply to reach a tier.

Fans of M.O.: choose what will improve this visit

Mandarin Oriental’s Fans of M.O. offers a particularly useful idea: members booking a qualifying rate directly can choose up to two privileges for the stay.

The ordinary membership menu includes early check-in, late check-out, a US$50 dining or spa credit, a celebratory gift and daily breakfast. You can choose according to the visit: extra time in the room before an evening flight, for example, or a credit towards a treatment already planned. Breakfast for each guest counts as a separate choice.

Check the available menu at your hotel. These privileges are subject to availability, and an upgrade is not a standard choice for the entry membership. The higher Silk tier has a different set of benefits.

There is a price comparison to make here too. Mandarin Oriental’s FAQ defines the qualifying rate as publicly available and fully flexible; discounted or negotiated rates and third-party bookings do not qualify for the additional direct-booking privileges. Compare the full cost with other suitable rates, allowing for the value of your chosen benefits and the cancellation terms.

GHA DISCOVERY: status for trying different brands

GHA DISCOVERY is worth considering if your travels take you between different hotel brands. Membership is free, and one route to Titanium is eligible stays at three different member brands within a calendar year. Three hotels carrying the same brand will not do it.

That is an interesting alternative to a long run of nights with one chain. The other Titanium routes are 30 eligible nights or US$15,000 in eligible spending within the calendar year.

Titanium brings a two-category upgrade, arrival from 11 a.m. and departure until 4 p.m., all subject to availability. The brand qualification route can make these benefits accessible without travelling every month.

Titanium also includes breakfast for two at participating hotels on eligible direct bookings. Check the property’s benefits before choosing the rate.

ALL Accor+ Explorer: a paid membership with regional strengths

ALL Accor+ Explorer combines room discounts with dining benefits and an immediate route to ALL Accor Gold status. Accor’s international subscription page currently lists €215 per year; check the fee and product offered in your joining market.

The membership adds 30 status nights, giving access to Gold’s room upgrades and early check-in or late check-out where available. Accor sets out the brand-specific provisions in its status benefits.

Explorer’s other attractions include a 15% discount on eligible stays at participating hotels worldwide, plus dining discounts in Asia Pacific and the UAE. The current Explorer page lists 30% off food and 15% off drinks for up to ten guests at participating venues, with exclusions.

The two Stay Plus nights require attention: each supplies one room-only night within an eligible stay of at least two nights. Some properties require longer stays, and the two benefits cannot be used for consecutive or parallel bookings.

I would consider this for an itinerary with several suitable Accor stays and meals already in mind. Without that regional use, the cheaper ALL Accor+ Voyager, listed at €179 annually with discounts and 20 status nights, may be enough. It starts you at Silver, so do not assume the same room benefits.

I Prefer: useful to check before an independent-hotel booking

Preferred Hotels & Resorts’ I Prefer Hotel Rewards is another free membership to keep in mind. Its entry tier includes early check-in, late check-out and enhanced room upgrades, subject to availability at participating hotels.

Those privileges are available from the entry tier, so membership can be useful for an occasional stay as well as a return visit. Check that your booking channel and rate qualify, and put the membership number on the reservation before arrival.

Status matching: use the status you already have

Before starting again at the lowest tier, check whether a programme will recognise status you have already earned elsewhere. A status match grants a corresponding tier, sometimes for a trial period. A challenge sets a reduced stay requirement to earn or retain status. Some offers combine the two. Simply having an account with another programme is usually not enough; the useful starting point is an elite tier.

Hotel-to-hotel matches

Hilton’s status match gives approved applicants Gold for 90 days. Complete six qualifying paid nights in that period to retain Gold, or twelve in total to reach Diamond, through 31 March 2028 under the current offer. You need proof of eligible competing status and a stay within the previous 24 months. Hilton’s general eligibility rules restrict this route to Base or Silver members who have not previously used it. Reward stays do not count, and the clock starts at approval.

For Radisson Rewards, contact Member Services with proof of your elite membership elsewhere. Its policy allows one match every five years, valid for the current year. Confirm the awarded tier and its expiry before planning a stay around the benefits, particularly if you apply late in the year.

If a trip takes you to Best Western, its free Status Match…No Catch is another option. It reviews proof of competing hotel status and assigns the corresponding tier. Members upgraded through a match in 2026 retain it through December 2027.

Partner routes and targeted challenges

Bonvoy has a published route through Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer partnership. Eligible PPS Club and KrisFlyer Elite Gold members can register for Bonvoy Gold, with an accelerator to Platinum after ten qualifying nights within six months. This uses airline status; it is a different arrangement from asking Marriott to match a rival hotel programme. Link the accounts and register for the offer before counting stays towards it.

Hyatt’s targeted 2026 Elite Tier Offer gives eligible members a 90-day Explorist trial from registration. Ten qualifying nights retain Explorist; twenty earn Globalist, through 29 February 2028. Registration runs through 31 December 2026, and participation is limited to once every three years. Confirm that you qualify before arranging the stays: the offer excludes previously booked reservations, and nights awarded through credit cards or promotional bonuses do not count.

Card benefits can provide another route. Accor has announced a phased American Express Platinum partnership offering ALL Gold in selected markets. Check the benefit attached to your exact card and issuing country before paying for another way to reach that tier.

Apply when the stays already make sense

Prepare a current membership card or account screenshot showing your name and tier, plus stay evidence where requested. Read when the qualifying period starts, which bookings count and how long the resulting status lasts. Allow time for approval; a stay completed before a challenge begins may be wasted for its purposes.

I would use a match to improve travel already planned. Adding unnecessary nights to win a badge can undo its value very quickly. Also check separately for night-earned rewards: a matched tier does not automatically mean receiving every suite award or lounge voucher described above.

When an annual fee earns its place

Start with the hotel and dates you want. Then compare the complete cost of booking with and without membership, keeping the room, cancellation terms, taxes and meals as similar as possible.

Count only benefits you would use. A dining credit has little value if dinner is booked elsewhere. A late departure may matter greatly before an evening flight and very little before an early train. An unconfirmed upgrade should contribute nothing to the amount you are prepared to pay upfront.

For a paid membership, I would want the trips already planned to make a convincing case for the fee. For a free one, the important work is usually checking the rate and reservation route. Either way, book a room you would be happy to keep.

My Lodgings collection begins with the places themselves. I would approach membership the same way: choose the hotel first, then see what the programme can add.
