At night, the Mara River announced itself before I could see it. Hippos climbed out of the water below our tent. Hyenas and lions called somewhere in the dark. The canvas walls did not pretend that any of this was far away.
Entim never tried to give us the sealed calm of a conventional luxury hotel. The Masai Mara continued on the other side of a thin layer of fabric, which was rather more exciting. I chose the camp for my birthday in November 2021. It was also where I ate best during our Kenya trip. Entim was one stop on a longer safari through Kenya; we travelled with our own driver and went on game drives with our own guide.
A tent beside the river
Entim sat inside the Masai Mara National Reserve, right on the river. Our tent looked onto the grass and riverine trees, with a small terrace at the front. Buffalo, elephants, and antelope sometimes appeared below. Baboons were less discreet; they began their morning business while I was still negotiating with the idea of getting out of bed.

The room was simple in the useful safari-camp way. There was a proper bed, a hot shower, and only a few electrical sockets. At night, someone turned down the bed and tucked in a hot-water bottle for the cool hours. Nothing tried to isolate us from the reserve; it simply made life inside it comfortable.

Privacy here was mostly visual. Sound traveled straight through canvas. Birds woke first, then came the soft arrival of aromatic coffee and biscuits at the tent. I usually object to being awake at dawn. In the Mara, dawn had a persuasive argument.

A birthday balloon safari over the Masai Mara
On November 6, my birthday began before sunrise with a hot-air-balloon flight over the Masai Mara. From the basket, the plains looked almost abstract: long tracks, small herds, and the first orange light moving over everything.
My husband took a photograph with the horizon tilted at a heroic angle. When I asked why, he said the Earth is round. Marriage is full of useful technical explanations.
The camp marked my birthday during the stay, but the gestures that stayed with me were not grand. Coffee appeared when the birds started. The bed was warm when the temperature dropped. Nobody had to announce that the service was personal.

Today, Wilder offers balloon safaris over the Masai Mara for guests at Entim, describing a flight of around an hour followed by a bush breakfast with champagne. Ask the camp or your safari organiser to confirm the balloon operator, pickup time, total price and what is included before booking.
The best food of our Kenya trip
Remote safari camps can treat meals as a practical pause between game drives. Entim did not. Dinner arrived properly plated in the lantern-lit dining tent; breakfast looked out over the grass. Across the places we stayed in Kenya, this was the food I remember as the best.

Menus change, of course, and I can judge only what we ate. The combination was convincing: careful cooking, an intimate dining room, and staff who made a small camp feel generous rather than limited.
The tradeoff is also the reason to stay
My notes contain no material service failure or comfort problem. The compromises were Entim’s location in reverse: animal noise at night, early mornings, and limited sockets. Anyone who needs hotel-style insulation from weather and wildlife should choose differently.
For me, those were not defects to be corrected. I could watch the light change from the tent, listen to hippos after dark, then sit by the fire while giraffes and zebras became silhouettes on the plains. The Mara was not reduced to a view from a polished room.

What has changed at Entim Camp
This review is based on my stay from November 5 to 8, 2021, and the room photographs show the camp as it was then. The property is now presented as Entim Main Camp. As checked in August 2026, the operator describes 12 raised, river-facing tents with private verandas and en-suite bathrooms, plus a central viewing deck, dining area, bar, gift shop, and spa. In other words, do not use my 2021 tent photograph as a room-category promise for a current booking. Ask for a current room plan, transfer details, and a complete quote before booking.
After dark at Entim
The walk back to our tent after dark was escorted. The current operator still describes staff accompanying guests back after dinner. On arrival, ask how to request an escort when leaving your tent, and arrange one before setting out after dark.
After the fire
Entim’s compromises came directly from the Mara: animal noise, early starts, limited sockets, and an escorted walk to the tent after dark. I would not separate them from the reason I had come. The camp let the reserve remain present after the game drive ended.
I would return for the hour when the fire dies down, the path to the tent is dark, and the river begins making noise again. Entim did not give me a quiet birthday. It gave me one I could still hear years later.
